ClickFunnels, Systeme.io or HighLevel? How I'd choose a funnel builder today
After twelve years of running sales funnels for a direct-sales business, here's the checklist I'd use to pick a funnel builder in 2026 — and why the tool matters less than the follow-up.
For twelve years I built and ran the sales funnels behind a direct-sales business that grew to 17,000+ customers. Most of that ran on ClickFunnels, with Shopify and WooCommerce behind it for orders and ActiveCampaign for the follow-up. People still ask me which funnel builder to use. My honest answer is a checklist, not a brand.
What a funnel builder actually has to do
Strip away the marketing and every funnel builder is doing four jobs:
- Landing pages that load fast and say one thing clearly.
- Capture — a form that puts a name and email somewhere useful.
- Checkout — take money with as few steps as possible.
- Follow-up — email and SMS sequences that run after someone raises their hand.
If a tool does all four well enough, the rest is preference. If it does one badly, that one is your bottleneck.
The three I'd look at
- ClickFunnels is what I know best. Its strength is opinionated templates and a checkout flow that just works. The trade-off is price and a habit of encouraging very long sales pages.
- Systeme.io is the budget all-in-one: funnel builder, email list, courses and a free tier. For someone starting with no list and no budget, it removes most of the excuses.
- HighLevel is built for agencies: a CRM, pipelines, SMS, calendars and funnels in one account, with sub-accounts per client. If you manage marketing for other people, its CRM is the reason to choose it.
I've used ClickFunnels in production for years; Systeme.io and HighLevel I've evaluated rather than run at scale. Weigh that accordingly.
The questions that decide it
- Who owns the contact list? Make sure you can export everything — contacts, tags, purchase history — in a format another tool can import.
- Where does the CRM live? If your team works leads by phone or text, the CRM matters more than the page builder.
- How does it hand off to email automation? Native email is fine early. Once sequences get complex, a dedicated tool like ActiveCampaign earns its cost.
- What breaks on launch day? Ask how checkout behaves under a traffic spike. A broken checkout costs more than any monthly fee.
What I'd tell my earlier self
The funnel that grew that business wasn't clever. It was one page, one offer, one next step — and a follow-up sequence that kept going after the first "not yet". I wrote about that in what 17,000 customers taught me.
Pick the tool your team will actually maintain. Then spend ten times as long on the follow-up as on the page.
